What is so amazing about the picture is this: Only five points of light in this photograph are in our own galaxy. Everything else is another galaxy millions upon millions of light years away. The picture was taken over the course of 400 hubble orbits of the Earth, adding to a total exposure time of over 1 million seconds. If this doesn't give you a sense of scale, nothing will.
